Panels & Sections

Garage Door Panel Replacement

Hail damage, wind damage, and the panel somebody reversed into. Sometimes one section is all that needs replacing.

Can one garage door panel be replaced?

A deformed section does not ride the track squarely. It binds, drags on the rollers, and eventually makes the opener work against resistance on every cycle.

That is why we suggest looking at a dented panel sooner rather than later. What starts as cosmetic becomes a track and roller problem, and then an opener problem.

Can a single panel be replaced?

Sometimes, and it depends almost entirely on one thing: whether that panel is still manufactured.

SituationRealistic outcome
Door under ~10 years, current modelSingle panel replacement usually possible
Discontinued modelMatch may be impossible; often a full door
Multiple sections damagedFull replacement is normally better value
Bottom section damagedReplaceable, but check the cables and brackets too
Colour has weathered years in the sunA new panel will not match; expect a visible difference

That last one matters more here than most places. Lubbock sun fades a door noticeably over a decade, and a new section in the original colour will not match the ones either side of it.

Hail and wind damage

Late spring and summer storms bring hail through the South Plains, and haboobs bow wide doors inward. Both produce panel damage, and both are frequently insurance claims rather than out-of-pocket repairs.

Photograph the damage in good light before anything is repaired, and read our page on hail claims before you call your insurer.

Questions we get asked

How do I know if my panel is still available?

We identify the manufacturer and model from the label inside the door and check availability before quoting. We will not order and hope.

Is one panel cheaper than a whole door?

Usually, but not always. On a discontinued door, sourcing a single section can cost more than a new door. We tell you which situation you are in.

Will the new panel match?

Structurally yes. Cosmetically, on an older sun-faded door, expect a visible difference.

My door was bent by the wind, not hail.

How many panels can be replaced before a new door makes more sense?

As a rough rule, once you are replacing three or more sections on a door that is already fifteen or twenty years old, the cost curve crosses. Below that, single-panel replacement usually wins. The deciding factor is availability rather than count: one discontinued section can cost more to source than three current ones.

Can you replace the bottom panel only?

Often, and the bottom section is the most common one to need it — it takes the water, the grit and the reversing-vehicle damage. It also carries the bottom seal and the lift cable brackets, so it is worth having done properly rather than patched.

Will a replacement panel be the same colour?

A new section in the same model and colour will be a close match but usually a visibly newer one, because the existing door has faded in West Texas sun. On a south or west-facing door that difference is more noticeable. We will be honest about how it will look before you commit.
