Garage Door Opener Limit Settings
If your door stops short of the floor, opens only partway, or keeps forgetting where it should stop, the travel limits are what you are looking at.
What travel limits do
The limits tell the opener where the floor is and where fully open is. They are not a fault in themselves, they are a setting, and they drift over time as the assembly wears.
If your door has started stopping a few inches short, or hits the floor and bounces back up, adjusting the limits usually fixes it in ten minutes with a screwdriver.
How do I adjust the travel limits on a garage door opener?
- Find the two adjustment screws or buttons on the motor unit, marked up and down. On older chain-drive units they are plastic screws with arrows.
- Adjust in small increments. A quarter turn moves the stop point noticeably.
- Run a full cycle after every adjustment. Do not make three changes and then test.
- The door should sit flat on the floor with the bottom seal just compressed, not crushed.
- When you are done, run the safety reversal test with a piece of timber laid flat under the door.
Newer openers with a learn button set limits automatically. You hold the button, run the door to each position, and it records them. The manual for your specific model is worth two minutes of reading.
When it is not the settings
If the door keeps losing its limits repeatedly no matter how carefully you set them, the limit assembly itself is worn. On older chain-drive openers this is a small plastic component that tracks travel, and it wears out. It is an inexpensive part and is a routine replacement.
That is the honest answer we give on the phone quite often, because it is a genuinely cheap fix that some companies would rather sell you a new opener to solve.

How do I know if it is the limits or the sensors?
Limits produce a consistent stop point every time. Sensor faults are usually erratic. If the door stops in exactly the same spot on every cycle, it is the limits. Compare with the sensor page.
My door opens only halfway now.
That is the up limit, or the door binding in the track. If it opens fully when you lift it by hand with the opener disconnected, it is the limit setting.
Do I need to reset limits after a spring replacement?
Sometimes. Changing the spring changes how the door balances and the opener may need re-learning. We check it as part of the job on a spring replacement.
