Texas does not issue a state licence for garage door repair. Any company telling you they hold a “Texas garage door licence” is stretching the truth, because no such thing exists. General contracting isn’t licensed at state level here either.
What actually requires a licence is narrower than that. Per the Department of Public Safety’s own guidance, a standard garage door opener install — the motor, remotes, keypad, wall button — does not need a state licence in Texas. A Class D licence from the Texas Department of Public Safety only comes into it if the opener is wired into an alarm system or used to monitor or log when the door opens and closes, or if the company does other regulated security work under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1702. If a job does cross into that territory, ask for the licence number before the work starts.
Check they carry liability insurance too. “Licensed, bonded and insured” is a phrase that sounds reassuring and means very little on its own — ask for the specifics.

A standard opener install with a remote, keypad or wall button does not require it. If a company’s work does cross into access control, ask for that licence number and ask separately about liability insurance.
Do you charge for a quote over the phone?
No. Describe what the door is doing and we will tell you what it likely needs and what it will take to put right.
