Why West Texas Is Hard on Garage Doors
Doors here do not wear out the way they do in Dallas or Houston. Four conditions do the damage, and all four are local.
The short version
Lubbock sits at about 3,300 feet on the South Plains, gets roughly 18 inches of rain a year, and averages around 19 mph of wind. That combination puts abrasive grit into every moving part of a garage door, year-round.
Add a temperature range from 28°F January mornings to 93°F July afternoons, haboobs most years, and hail through storm season, and you have four independent sources of wear that a door in a milder climate never sees.
Why are garage doors harder to keep working in West Texas?
- Dust in the tracks. Abrasive grit in tracks and rollers. The most common preventable failure here.
- Wind loading. Haboobs bow wide doors inward and pull rollers out of the track.
- Temperature swing. Thermal cycling fatigues spring steel faster than the cycle rating assumes.

What it means practically
Three things follow from all of this, and they are worth knowing whoever you call.
- Maintenance matters more here. Clearing grit out of the tracks a few times a year genuinely extends the life of rollers and springs in a way it would not in a wetter climate.
- Nylon rollers are worth the difference. Steel rollers grind themselves out early in dust. Sealed nylon lasts considerably longer.
- Cycle ratings understate the wear. A 10,000-cycle spring rated for roughly seven years of typical use will often go sooner here.
None of that is a sales pitch. It is why a door that gave a decade of trouble-free service somewhere else starts needing attention after six or seven years in Lubbock.
